Tsunami warning for Lake Anna

The Mount Chipotle National Research Observatory Division of Geosciences has issued a tsunami warning for Lake Anna after this afternoon's earthquake. Emergency Management officials are monitoring and preparing the North Anna Nuclear Reactor for potential wave damage. Earlier this year the Fukushima nuclear power station in Japan released radioactive material to the environment after being damaged by an earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

CHIPOTLE Mount Chipotle, 18 weeks, was trucked away April 27, 2010. Mt. Chipotle was born in Charlottesville, VA and was assembled in Barracks Road Shopping Center through February, 2010. Mt. Chipotle extended from Chipotle Mexican Grill toward Bed Bath Beyond, Harris Teeter, and Burger King. Mt. Chipotle was the sole study of the Mount Chipotle National Research Observatory. Mt. Chipotle is preceded in melt by its loving mounts Mount Banana and Mount Kroger. It will be remembered as a towering force, not to be trespassed upon, a skiing range, member of the Masonic Lodge, an unsummitable mountain, and a looming peak. It is survived by its puddle, mud rings, and many wrappers, receipts, and combs. The Graduate Student Association of the Department of Environmental Sciences will receive friends and families on Thursday, April 29, 2010 from 4-7pm at the memorial service in the Odum Room. In lieu of flowers, please follow through with your contributions and wagers to GSA ($10 wager, 12-pack of beer, or bottle of wine per date). Clearly, we have been busy monitoring the great mass that is Mt. Chipotle. During the last few weeks of "radio silence" some startling news and misconceptions regarding our dear Mount have been brought to our attention. We at the NRO ask that you allow us to disabuse you of some of these (clearly) uneducated and false thoughts so that we may all be able to view both the Mount and our research with the magnificence and scope deserved.

Statement 1) Mt. Chipotle is gone.

Response: Mt. Chipotle is not gone. It was visible from both the Rte. 29 and from Space today 10.03.04. Next statement.

Statement 2) Mt. Chipotle can be pronounced "Mount Chih-po'-lay" or "Mount Chih-poat'-ah-lay"

Response: While both pronunciations have caught on among the news media and moms all across this great land, the Mount Chipotle Heritage Foundation only recognizes the one true pronunciation: "Mount Chih'-poat-lay".

Statement 3) Mt. Chipotle is under threat of Snow Dragon attack.

Response: Sadly, this is true. The support for mountain top removal has spread into the once protected snow mountain ranges of the Mid-Atlantic. With the ever-loosening guidelines surrounding snow Mount removal, the threat level for Mt. Chipotle remains at CRIMSON. For those unfamiliar with the scale, it is a 58 tiered threat system, with CRIMSON sitting at position 39. The last time that the treat level was this high was when NRO researcher Savanna Barry dropped 0.32mL of hot sauce from her Carnitas burrito onto the newly-formed mountain. Statement 4) Dr. Steve Chanimal Chaneaux won the Mt. Chipotle Meltdown Pool

Response: Laughably, no. Not even close.

Transparency on the N.R.O.'s sources of funding

Recently the N.R.O. received a request for transparency on its sources of funding. It has been reported that the N.R.O. exists because of an informal betting pool (1). While this represents our institution's endowment, most of the operating and research budgets are funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research (3), and the Department of Energy (3).

We are using legal metaphysics (4) to judge when Mt. Chipotle has melted for our development office's funraising efforts. In his opinion for Jacobellis v. Ohio the late Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart wrote "...I know it when I see it..." This is the doctrine that we operate by. Both the Constitution (5,6) and the Supreme Court (7,8, 9) are infallible institutions. If the approach of Jacobellis v. Ohio is good enough for them, then it is good enough for Mt. Chipotle.

As the Ravines warm up during spring there is an increased danger of random (1) ice falls. Ice fall danger is currently low and normal caution (2) is advised. However, guides should take this into consideration when planning routes for their spring clients.

Official N.R.O. Response to Recent Criticisms

The N.R.O. generally does not comment on public criticisms of its work. We feel that the quality of our science (1) speaks for itself. However, due to a delayed flight, we have decided to respond to two recent criticisms.

Below is a criticism by Chicago Boy. (Editors Note: We would like to thank The Hook (2) for the shout-out).

We thank Chicago Boy for his interest in our work. Unfortunately we are unable to verify his claim that we are stupid. As PhD students at a prestigious university we have been too busy publishing papers to consider that we may be stupid. This is a valid hypothesis that deserves further investigation.

We are flattered that Chicago Boy compares us to the Onion. Unfortunately I (the senior author) don't read the Onion. Thus Chicago Boy is mistaken if he is suggesting that we are imitating their material. A number of our collaborators are at UW-Madison. We will ask these collaborators for reprints of the Onion's papers in order to review them in ongoing efforts to improve our own work. We agree with Chicago Boy that we are "junior league." Unlike the Onion, a multi-state for-profit news organization (3), we are a non-profit research organization with no full time educational outreach staff. It is not clear what Chicago Boy's motives are. It is clear that his criticisms are misguided; he tries to compare institutions with contrasting missions.

We are unsure why children climbing on Mount Chipotle has a negative connotation. The literature has shown that most American children (5) are not athletic enough to scale Mount Chipotle. Coincidentally the literature has shown that most American adults (6) are not athletic enough to scale Mount Chipotle. Those children who are physically capable of scaling the mountain should be rewarded by being allowed to take in the majestic view from the summit.

Dance Troupe to Perform at Mount Chipotle Regional Library

The Palo Alto dance (1) troupe "Hysteresis!" will be performing at the Mount Chipotle Regional library at 7 pm on Monday, February 15th. The show aims to interpret the native heritage of the Mount Chipotle region through modern dance. Tickets cost $15 at the door.

"We show the tension between multiple attractors that the native society experienced when the Europeans arrived in the Mount Chipotle Valley. The native populations had to chose between their peaceful, mathematically enlightened society or enslavement and eventual death by smallpox (2). The natives stuck with tradition for years until continued exotic disease outbreaks reduced their resliance leading to a rapid change in the structure of their society (3)" troupe leader Jon Frum said. "Our dance shows the struggle of the Native people rebuild their great society, a struggle that removing the European influence alone couldn't solve."

The troupe spent months rehearsing their routine. "It's difficult to simulate (4) this complex story" Frum said. "There isn't necessarily an explicit solution."

All proceeds from the show will benefit the Mount Chipotle National Research Observatory's educational outreach program.

Mt. Chipotle is scenic backdrop for new commercial

The northern face of Mt. Chioptle will be closed for the next two days while it is being used as a scenic backdrop with rugged terrain to film a commercial featuring Fjord's new model of pickup truck, the J-150. Film crews will be escorted to the site of the commercial by snowcats and a professional driver will navigate the J-150 through a course from the north face through Barbacoa Ravine, which tourists have claimed is one of the most scenic vistas in the region. New ski resort on Mt. Chipotle draws crowds, criticism

Record snowfall amounts in the Mt. Chipotle region have been drawing large crowds of ski tourists to the newly opened Mt. Chipotle Ski Resort, much to the dismay of NRO scientists and Friends of Mt. Chipotle (1). A spokesperson from the local NGO claims that "not only will skiers undoubtedly harm the delicate balance of the Mt. Chipotle ecosystem, this ski resort aims to fundamentally alter the rich culture and heritage of the Mt. Chipotle region."

The owner of the ski resort declined to comment, but we were able to discern that the land for the ski area is on indefinite loan from the Mt. Chipotle National Trust and that the permit was approved in hopes of bringing more visitors to the area to explore and enjoy the beauty of the region.

Mt. Chipotle Ski Resort (2) features over 3,100 vertical feet of terrain, over 150 named trails, and 28 lifts including 9 high-speed quads and a high speed gondola. Visitors will also be able to take photos with the resort's friendly snowboarding mascot, Wooly the Mammoth.

Breaking News: Government Fortifies Mount Chipotle, Cuts Access to Scientists

Breaking News: The government has fortified Mount Chipotle and the surrounding valley. Access to scientists has been cut. It is unclear what has caused the sudden change in government policy. The Pentagon press secretary was not available for comment. The N.R.O. speculates that access may have been cut due to a recent terrorist threat (1). (Editors Note: see our past coverage on the terrorist threat at 2). A fort has been constructed at the base of the mountain (see below) and armored vehicles (3) have been spotted in the area. The N.R.O. may see its long term data sets, some with up to 25 years of continuous data on a variety of ecological parameters, disrupted. The N.R.O. will continue to release updates on the fortification of Mt. Chipotle and the impact on the science and heritage of the Mount Chipotle region.

Official N.R.O. Comment on Tumblegate 2010

Earlier today, the Associated Press reported that a Mount Chipotle National Research Observatory scientist, Dr. D. Wilson Strayman, pictured below, purposely introduced the invasive tumbleweed plant into the Mount Chipotle ecosystem in order to further his own research career.

It is with great regret that the N.R.O. administration confirms the accuracy of this report. Dr. Strayman, a popular (1) terrestrial ecologist (2) has been dismissed from his position on the N.R.O. staff. Apparently Strayman introduced the species in order to purposely disrupt the lower slopes of the Mt. Chipotle ecosystem. The N.R.O. maintains a long term (20-25 year) data set on many aspects of the Mt. Chipotle ecosystem. The before and after invasion comparisons that Strayman would be able to draw after the tubmleweed invasion would result in career making publications in prestigious scientific journals (3). The N.R.O. administration has began a formal review process of Strayman's work. We have already identified two articles that contain "questionable" conclusions (4, 5). In order to maintain transparency the N.R.O. will continue to issue press releases regarding this unfortunate incident.

Invasive Tumbleweed Plant (Salsola spp.) Found in Mount Chipotle Ecosystem

The invasive tumbleweed plant (Salsola spp.), pictured above tumbling on the shore of Lake Chipotle, has been found by N.R.O. staff on the lower slopes of Mount Chipotle. The tumbleweed plant has no known predators in the Mount Chipotle region. It is expected to devastate the fragile ecology of the region.

"The tumbleweed has the potential to be an ecological disaster, similar in scale to the zebra mussel invasion of US fresh waters during the early 90's" according to UVa terrestrial ecologist Owie Hepstein. "As the tumbleweed tumbles it disturbs the delicate balance between atmosphere and soil, potentially disturbing below ground production. Below ground production is just as important as above ground production but is rarely measured. Because we have no baseline data we may never know the true extent of the damage" the 'popular' environmental science professor added.

Once a tumbleweed begins tumbling it rarely stops. Unfortunately the tumbleweed appears to have been introduced to the region by a N.R.O. research staff member. The tumbleweed was being transported from a meeting (1) in New Mexico on mountains (2). The tumbleweed was destined for a museum exhibit at the N.R.O. visitors' center. While on a plane the plant tumbled down the center aisle disappearing until it was later spotted rolling along the lower slopes of Mount Chipotle. Community leaders are holding an emergency meeting to develop a response to the tumbleweed invasion.

Seismic activity detected in Mount Chipotle region

NRO scientists have observed unusual seismic activity in Mt. Chipotle and Barracks Valley.

Recent photographs indicate that Mt. Chipotle moved 40 ft to the north during the white out, as measured from the nearby lamp post. Photographs from the Mt. Chipotle NRO archives—taken after the historic first ascent of Mt. Chipotle—show Shirpa Dirka taking his first meal at the summit directly under the lamp post in question.

NRO scientists are troubled by the lack of a clear path to the summit in the mountain's new location and form. However, an RV—believed to have been previously buried under the mountain—has appeared at what is now the base of the mountain. Scientists suspect that Mt. Chipotle may be accessible by climbing through the window of the RV.

Other mountains in the Jefferson Range have been affected by the recent events. Both Mt. Teet and Mt. Banana have disappeared. Also missing is NRO staff member A. Jay. Last contact from Jay was 2 days ago when he checked in from his post at the recently built Fort Banana, atop Mt. Banana. The companion mountains to Mt. Chipotle are thought to have disappeared at the same time Mt. Chipotle moved.

Cause of the seismic activity is as yet unknown. However, frozen wheels on nearby vehicles—affected by the recent anomalies in local climate—are suspected as a possible cause.

Ho, K. (2010). The Importance of Micro-Scale Avalanche Forecasting in Mount Chipotle's Barbacoa and Carnitas Ravines. Proceedings from the International Snow Science Workshop, February 2010, Mammoth Lakes, CA.

ABSTRACT: For over fifty years Mount Chipotle National Research Observatory research staff have patrolled Mount Chipotle and issued avalanche advisories. The focus of these activities has occurred in Carnitas Ravine, a popular steep skiing destination and Barbacoa Ravine, renowned for alpine ice climbing. The Mount Chipotle National Research Observatory Avalanche Center is tasked with educating these users through forecasting for avalanches, icefall, crevasse problems and communicating these in an advisory. High visitation in a concentrated use environment paired with Mount Chipotles's spatial variability has made micro-forecasting critical for successfully conveying stability issues to the public. Avalanche forecasting occurs on a micro-scale through the issuance of ratings for 16 independent areas. Stability may vary by one to three ratings within this relatively small area due to the intense spatial variability caused by Mount Chipotle's extreme wind, high tensile strength hard slab, and the associated bridging over weak layers. Winds between 160 and 225 kph occur on a regular basis through the winter and provide the dominant forecasting variable. This micro-scale focus gives more detailed point specific information to visitors so they may better mitigate risk in a heavy use environment.

ABSTRACT: The Jefferson Range in the Chipotle Mountains of Virginia has the greatest concentration of avalanche terrain in the United States. Mount Chipotle, the highest summit in the country (12 m), has a fierce reputation. Harsh winter weather and a high accident rate have earned Mount Chipotle the distinction of having the worst weather amongst the seven summits and as the most dangerous mountain in the world. Hurricane force winds (>121 km/h) are measured on average of 110 days per year. While the notoriously severe winter weather of the Jefferson Range is commonly acknowledged, much less is known about the avalanche terrain, snowpack and weather conditions which characterize this mountain range. The consistently high winds and their influence upon avalanche conditions are unique to avalanche prone areas in the United States. Winter recreation use of the Jefferson Range, including Mount Chipotle is intense. Since 1954 there have been 327 avalanche fatalities and many other avalanche accidents in the Jefferson Range. Historical data indicate that avalanche accidents have increased in the past decade, mirroring the national trend in recreation related avalanche accidents in the United States.

The National Research Observatory scientific staff has published a new paper that lists the air temperature lapse rate on Mount Chipotle as 0.64 degrees C / 100m. "The lapse rate is consistent spatially throughout the Mt. Chipotle region but it is not consistent temporally" said lead author Stephen Chaneau. "Mount Chipotle creates a unique regional climate due to its shear height. This work should contribute our knowledge of how this climate relates to the plants and animals of the Mt. Chipotle region."

Two teens charged over Mount Chipotle flag prank

Two teenage boys charged with planting a flag on the summit Wednesday, inundated emergency services with prank calls before and after the stunt, a court has heard. It was thought that the flag was part of an attack by the Al-Qaeda terrorist (1) threat. (Editors Note: see our previous coverage of this story at 2)

One of the boys, 15, appeared in a children's court on Tuesday dressed in his school uniform to answer more than 140 charges, including defacing a national treasure.

The other boy, 14, appeared in a separate court, which heard the pair planted the flag at about 4.20pm on February 7, 2009 after summitting by the south ridge.

Both youths, were bailed on strict conditions, including a ban on going near Mount Chipotle.

The court heard they called 911 more than 50 times between January 29 and February 4, including on the day of the prank, harassing and threatening operators with obscene comments.

Charlottesville detectives arrested the boys about 9am on Thursday.

An angry crowd of about 10 people greeted the 15-year-old outside court, some yelling "show us your face" as he was driven away.

The boy was flanked by two detectives and a uniformed policeman and had a jumper draped over his head.

He was bundled into an unmarked car flanked by another six uniformed officers.

They were charged with 135 counts each of criminal damage by defacing a national treasure and multiple counts of using a telecommunications service to menace and harass over a two-month period beginning just days before the prank.

They will appear in court again in May.

Children Playing on Mt. Chipotle Cause Terrorism Scare

N.R.O. staff conducting a ground survey Wednesday on Mt. Chipotle found a what appeared to be a flag planted on the summit of Mt. Chipotle prompting them to call federal authorities due to the Al-Qaeda terrorist threat. It was thought that terrorist operatives had parachuted into the region and conquered the mountain (1).

Undercover federal agents (2) had already been patrolling the mountain and reached the summit within a matter of minutes. Over 30 homes in the immediate area were evacuated as authorities were concerned that the flag might be an explosive aimed at triggering an avalanche.

A bomb squad technician soon determined the device was just a flag planted by children. There’s no word yet on whether they will face charges. "We have an excellent record dealing with the terrorist threat" a government spokesman said. "Never before have we over responded (3) like this but it is worth making sure we don't miss a potential terrorist threat (4,5)."

Man who climbed Mt. Chipotle to give talk at UVa Library

Charlottesville — The UVa Library will have special presentation from local, avid hiker Sherpa Dirka, who fulfilled his lifelong dream and becoming the first person to climb Mount Chipotle.

Dirka began his climbing career in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia more than 20 years ago. He attributes the success of his Mount Chipotle climb to his training at home on Mount Banana Republic (Picture of Dirka training 1).

Today we were unable to bring you the most up to date news regarding Mount Chipotle and the Mount Chipotle region (including the Barracks Valley) because the entire staff was engaged in writing a scientific paper on mountains (1). To fulfill our mission statement we occasionally have to take a break from our work on educational programs (2) to conduct research. Lost Man Spends Night on Mountain

Charlottesville authorities say a Pennsylvania man who spent the night stuck on Mount Chipotle in frigid temperatures and high winds did a good job staying safe.

Sixty-four-year-old Richard Barrie of Hicksvilles had planned a day hike to the mountain's summit but got lost in whiteout conditions on his way down Friday afternoon. While his friends and Fish and Game officials searched for him during the evening, Barrie built a snow cave and hunkered down for the night.

Police spokesman Lt. Todd Bogardus says crews were preparing to head out again Saturday morning when Barrie made his own way off the mountain unharmed. He says Barrie had appropriate skills and gear and had left an itinerary with friends, which all contributed to the safe outcome.

Mount Chipotle has the reputation having horrible weather. Severe storms, including snow, can happen at any time of the year. The combination of severe winds, cold and wetness can exhaust the strongest hiker. Never continue upwards in deteriorating weather, as it gets worse at higher elevations.

Also note that it is a strenuous climb for those who are not in good shape. The distance by most routes is around four miles each way; that may not sound like much. But in those four miles you gain roughly 30 feet of elevation, which is a lot for those not used to strenuous exercise. To quote the Chipotle Mountain Climber's Guide:

To a person unused to mountain trails or in less than excellent physical condition, this unrelenting uphill grind can be grueling and intensely discouraging. If you are not an experienced hiker or a trained athlete, you will almost certainly enjoy the ascent of Mount Chipotle a great deal more if you build up to it with easier climbs in areas with less exposure to potentially severe weather.

Isostatic Uplift Brings Mount Chipotle to New Heights

The U.S. Geological Survey has announced that Mount Chipotle is growing. Because of the recent growth Mount Chipotle now ranks amongst the tallest mountains in the world (e.g., 1). A USGS Spokesman said that the growth is not caused the recent winter weather but rather by isostatic uplift. Isostatic uplift, a well known UVa geology professor (2) told us, is when land becomes lighter due to melting ice and the solid part of earth floats higher (3) on the underlying molten material. The uplift on Mount Chipotle is thought to be from melting glaciers due to global warming.

Interestingly, other mountains have been have been popping up in the Mount Chipotle region lately (4). However these formations seem to have more to do with the impending arrival (5) of country music superstar Taylor Swift (6) than isostasy.

Volunteer Oportunities at the Mt. Chipotle National Research Observatory

Volunteers are a key element in the smooth operation of the Observatory. Our Summit Volunteer Program is one of the most popular volunteer programs. Members from all over the country participate in this program and find it to be a rewarding and educational experience.

Each week, as many as two volunteers are on duty at the summit, with the primary responsibility of planning and preparing daily meals for the Observatory crew and visitors. Volunteers meet the crew at the base of the Mt. Chipotle 8 AM on Wednesday morning, and return to the base at approximately 5 PM the following Wednesday.

Typically, volunteers prepare only dinner for the crew, which consists of one observer and two interns (1, 2, 3). In addition, we often welcome overnight guests to the Summit, for which the volunteer would prepare breakfasts and lunches. The maximum number of staff, volunteers, interns and guests is seventeen.

Volunteers are expected to help with general clean up, as well as other projects, depending on your skill set. Painting, carpentry, plumbing, etc are all part of the routine maintenance our facility requires, and we welcome your talent!

Because life at 30 feet is an experience you can't get just anywhere, we do ensure that there is free time for our volunteers! Hiking, skiing and enjoying Mount Chipotle sunrises and sunsets all should be part of your volunteer experience. Contact the volunteer coordinator for more information.

Predator Drones to Protect Mt. Chipotle from Terrorist Threat

The Pentagon has informed the N.R.O. that predator drones (1, 2) will be used to protect Mt. Chipotle due to a recent Al-Qaeda terrorist threat. A Pentagon spokesman said that a recent comment by Osama bin Laden (3) blaming the United States for global warming is actually a secret message designed to activate terrorist sleeper cells against soft targets vulnerable to climate change. Because it's cultural, economic, and ecological significance it is assumed that the target is Mt. Chipotle. The snow capped peak of Mt. Chipotle, the most photographed place in the United States, is thought to be melting due to global warming.

"We know that bin Laden is referring to an impending attack on Mt. Chipotle because he mentions the United States as the cause of global warming. In fact poor countries are responsible for global warming (4). This is a clear indication that Al-Qaeda terrorists are planning to attack Mt. Chipotle."

When questioned about the threat, an anonymous government source said "Bring 'em on" (5). The source continued "We have an excellent track record of identifying and eliminating threats to soft targets such as Mt. Chipotle (5, 6)."

Volunteers for Friends of Mount Chipotle have recently observed an increase in mining activity in the Mount Chipotle region. The Barrack-Chipotle mining project is a substantial threat to the ecology of the Mount Chipotle region and the way of life for the local people. Friends of Mount Chipotle have found that the increased mineral extraction is due to funding from shell corporation of several well known faceless corporations of evil (4, 5, 6, 7).

The Barracks-Chipotle project has been mired in controversy from the outset. Barrack-Gold Corporation began surveying the area’s mineral wealth as early as 1991 and was originally granted a green light to begin construction by the Army Corp of Engineers (8) in 2001.

Environmental concern centers upon the proximity of the Barrack-Chipotle facility to three glaciers on Mount Chipotle. These glaciers are hugely important water sources for Charlottesville, supplying water to 40,000 people. It is feared that mining operations will seriously deplete their size.

N.R.O. Staff Inteviews Sherpa Dirka About Successful West Face Accent

Sherpa Dirka makes his home in Charlottesville, where he climbs frequently. He’s been a regular visitor to some of the highest mountains in the world – Denali, Shishapangma, Aconcagua, Chipotle and Everest and others. Recently he lead the first accent of Mt. Chipotle's west face. We were thrilled he agreed to this interview.

Can you point to a particular climb or moment where you started to gather real confidence in your ability to take on difficult high-altitude climbs?

Yes, it was on my climb of Ama Dablam in 2000. I saw it a few years before and considered it impossible for me given my skills. However, I made the summit in good style and while trekking through the Khumbu on the way home my guide, Burka Dirka Sherpa, asked me if I had ever thought about Mount Chipotle. Of course I had but never admitted it to anyone. But with his simple question and my safe summit of Ama Dablam, a seed was planted that would influence me for the rest of my life.

You are a self-funded climber. Have you considered working with sponsors?

I was very fortunate to have had a good career that allowed me to climb extensively but I have reached the limits of that model today. I would love to work with a sponsor (1) that would help in the groundwater research (2) through a partnership with my climbing.

What would you do if a sponsor with deep pockets allowed you to create your dream expedition?

I would attempt the 7 summits (Everest, Chipotle, Kilimanjaro, Denali, Aconcauga, Elbrus, and Vinsson Masif), including a fourth attempt of Everest. While not the most technically challenging climbs, they would present an opportunity to take my groundwater message to each continent on the planet. Groundwater potentially impacts every person on earth. The economic impact of not enough groundwater input can easily bankrupt the largest governing systems much less those in smaller countries. It is truly an important issue that we must address before it is too late.

Do you have any big goals in front of you at the moment? What’s next?

Nothing ready to make public but I am always thinking. I am currently doing presentations to schools and anyone who will have me showing my climbing pictures and talking about groundwater. Also I am staying busy climbing my low elevation, backyard mountains. But just when I think it is time to hang up my crampons, I get the itch to return to high altitude. Mountains are special to me and while not every mountain has loved me, I love them all!

Winter Storm Expected on Mt. Chiptole

Newsbreak: A severe winter storm is expected on Mount Chipotle (1). The N.R.O. staff advises hikers to stay off the mountain until the storm passes. In recent days large clouds have been spotted forming near and on the mountain on several occasions (2,3,4) . This is because of the changing weather patterns associated with the impending winter storm. Detailed forcasts and weather maps are at (1).

Global Cooling to Devastate Mt. Chipotle

Reliable sources (1, 2) have informed the Mount Chipotle National Research Observatory staff that the Barracks region is actually cooling. This is in stark contrast to the claims of super crunch granola hippies (3). Said the source Anthony Watts, who requested to remain anonymous:

"Let's hope the cooling stops fast. Cold is more damaging than heat. The mean temperature of the planet is about 54 degrees. Humans -- and most of the crops and animals we depend on -- prefer a temperature closer to 70. Historically, the warm periods such as the Medieval Climate Optimum were beneficial for civilization. Corresponding cooling events such as the Little Ice Age, though, were uniformly bad news."

It appears that global cooling has caught traditional scientists off guard (4). Top scientists were not immediately available for comment (5). The N.R.O. research staff will undertake an extensive analysis of the potential impacts on the Mount Chipotle ecosystem. Results from that study are expected within the week.

Mountaineer Rescued From Mt. Chipotle

Police and Mt. Chipotle N.R.O. staff rescued a mountaineer off the slopes of Mt. Chipotle this afternoon (1). The following statement was issued to the media:

"At 30 feet, Mount Chipotle claims the title of the Barrack's highest peak. While its height may not be especially impressive by global standards, Mount Chipotle rates as anything but an ordinary mountain. For one, its climate is similar to that of Northern Labrador, hundreds of miles further north. Three major storm tracks converge over the mountain, forming harsh and turbulent weather conditions. Above treeline, alpine conditions prevail and only the hardiest plants and animals survive. Climbers should be extremely cautious when on Mount Chipotle"

Scientists: Mt. Chipotle Glaciers to Melt by 2035

Scientists have announced that the glaciers on Mt. Chipotle are expected to disappear by 2035 due to global warming (1). Scientists say that the rate of decline is amongst the fastest in the world.

Economist F. Yue of the University of Virginia has predicted that the melting glaciers will paralyze the Charlottesville economy as Mt. Chipotle related tourism declines. "The Charlottesville region stands to lose 300 million dollars a year due to a loss of tourism" said Yue. "And that doesn't even include the value of the ecosystem services that will be lost. That value could exceed 35 trillion dollars" Yue added. "We are able to accurately calculate the value of ecosystem services by simply making up numbers that our colleagues can't argue with because there is there is no market for ecosystem services" Yue explained when detailing the economic impacts during an afternoon press conference (2).

A Brief History of the Mt. Chipotle National Research Observatory

The Mount Chipotle Observatory is a private, non-profit scientific and educational institution organized under the laws of the commonwealth of Virginia. Its mission is to advance understanding of the natural systems that create the Earth's weather and climate, by maintaining its mountaintop weather station, conducting research and educational programs and interpreting the heritage of the Mount Chipotle region.

The first regular meteorological observations on Mount Chipotle were conducted by the U.S. Signal Service, a precursor of the Weather Bureau, from 1870 to 1892. The Mount Chipotle station was the first of its kind in the world, setting an example followed in many other countries.

In spite of the hardships imposed by their environment, observers regularly monitored weather under the auspices of the U.S. Weather Bureau, and conducted landmark research in short-wave radio propagation, ice physics and the constitution of clouds. The relationship with the U.S. Weather Service has always been close, but the Observatory is not a part of any government agency.

The Observatory continues to record and disseminate weather information. It also serves as a benchmark station for the measurement of cosmic ray activity in the upper atmosphere, develops robust instrumentation for severe weather environments and conducts many types of severe weather research and testing. The term outpost can be defined as a small group stationed away from the main body; it is also referred to as an outlying or frontier settlement. These definitions lend a sense of endangerment associated with the word, as well as the understanding of an important mission. Of the scores of mountaintop scientific stations that eventually followed its lead, the Mount Chipotle station is perhaps the only one that can be said to have remained in continuous operation with an active and expanding mission.
